Journey of the Heart

It’s always inspirational to meet someone who has such a positive, faith-filled attitude that radiates from the inside out – despite any obstacles.  Kimberly Goodloe is one such woman. Though she has faced some health challenges, she continues to maintain an attitude of gratitude.  Finally, I seized the opportunity to ask Kimberly to share her story to give hope and encouragement to others facing their own challenges.

Tracy: Kimberly, this journey for you began a few years ago. Can you take us back and share what happened?

Kimberly: At the time of the event, I was 42 years old (now 44 years old).  It was a normal day at work; when I walked outside the classroom, I experienced a shortness of breath & elevated blood pressure. I called my doctor, a test was ordered and then it was discovered that something was wrong with my heart valve.  After further testing, it was discovered that I would need a heart surgery.

So, until that point in your life, there were no symptoms or indications of any problems with your heart?

Kimberly: I was born with an abnormal heart valve. My childhood was normal because I did not develop symptoms until adulthood.

In reading your story, the first surgery took place on February 12, 2009 but another surgery took place only a few days later on February 16, 2009. Tell us what happened.

Kimberly: Complications developed after the first procedure, severe enough that I received a pacemaker four days after my first surgery. A year later, June 23, 2010, my third procedure took place – a pacemaker revision.

What were the responses of those close to you – your family and friends?

Kimberly: My family & friends expressed their concerns over how long it would take for me to recover from three surgeries, and how they could all assist during my recovery period, etc. My strong support system: loving husband, beautiful children, family, medical staff, Pastor and church family, and a host of amazing friends continue to provide support & encouraging words. I thank God for blessing me with a wonderful support system.

I believe that it’s important for people to know that when we are going through difficult times, each day is not the same. There may be days when you feel strong and full of faith, but then there are those days when you’re literally struggling to hold on.  Kimberly, what about those times when there is no one else around- when it’s just you and God? What are those moments like? What are you saying to your Heavenly Father?

Kimberly: On those days when I’m not feeling 100% and no one else is around, I connect with God.  I pray to God for help, guidance & strength – He ALWAYS answers my prayers. Then I pick myself up and keep pressing through my recovery period. It’s a process that I practice daily. That’s the only way I know to survive- leaning on God (not man) for everything.

I know that community involvement is very important to you and I’ve always admired your perseverance to “keep it moving” as you would say.  Has this been helpful to you or has it played a role in helping you to continue pressing forward?

Kimberly: By helping others (even though I continue to face daily health challenges), I receive comfort in knowing that I did not give up in the hospital two years ago; but made a decision to embrace my assignment ( making a difference in the community).

Since the beginning of this journey, has anything changed in any way?

Kimberly: Yes, I’ve accepted my physical limitations, made adjustments and I focus on my blessings instead of my daily health challenges. Our family’s faith has elevated to a “higher” level because we know without a doubt that God is a healer.

All of us face challenges in different ways. Your challenge may not be mine and vice versa; so how important is it not to allow our challenges to turn us away from God?

Kimberly: It’s very important for us to keep our eyes “focused” on God and not the trials we face, by staying focused we gain confidence, strength & peace from God.

You’ve been a woman of great encouragement to so many throughout this season in your life. What opportunities have come forth as a result of your testimony?

Kimberly: God healed me; now I give back by sharing “ MY JOURNEY”, speaking at local health fairs & churches, writing my health blog, visiting cardiac patients & their families at the hospital – Mended Hearts Program,  developing community resources for various non-profit organizations, etc.

Kimberly, God is truly a God of “extreme makeovers”. Only He can take the less desirable conditions in our lives and use them to transform us into vessels for His Glory. Thank you for allowing others into your life, into your journey and most importantly into your heart.

Kimberly lives in Gwinnett with her husband and two children. If you would like to read more about Kimberly’s journey, visit her blog at http://4wedobelieve.wordpress.com.

Living Life on Purpose

I believe that many women today are yearning to know and to fulfill God’s divine purpose for their lives. They ask themselves, ” Why am I here and what am I called to do?”

As Women Encouraged enters into its third year, I wanted to start by talking to someone who can give us a little glimpse of insight into living life on purpose.  Over the years, I have observed her progress from one level to the next level of ministry. Her steps are ordered by the vision that God has placed within her. She never ceases to amaze me and others of what she will do next. Come and join me in this interview…

Tracy: Pastor BJ, having known you for quite a few years now, there is one thing that I know for certain…you are a woman who lives life on purpose. Has it always been that way?

Pastor B J: Fortunately, yet unfortunately no it has not always been this way.  The reason I say fortunately is because I now recognize the significant difference and unfortunately because there was valuable time which could have been used more effectively.

I believe that most of us want to know and fulfill God’s purpose for our lives; however, it can often be a challenge to confidently know where to begin. Are there ways that we can identify our purpose?

For me, I can identify my purpose with the divine passion that I have for developing, mentoring and provoking others to greatness.   Locating within- the value of your gift and your character will allow each of us to assist in the development of others.  Taking an honest assessment of strengths and weaknesses gives each of us permission to err with grace and correct with honor.

What factors do you believe hinder women from reaching their fullest potential?

Fear and insecurity are key factors which can be ultimate limitations in wholeness and reaching potential goals of success.  The fear of the “unknown” can be crippling, while the insecurities in one’s life may cause a dysfunctional reality of who they are destined to become.

What has been some of your challenges as you’ve followed God’s plan for your life?

Some of the challenges I have faced as I have followed God’s plan has been the devious attempts to bring harm to my inner peace.  I have experienced wounds which have been so painful, had it not been for the presence of the Lord, divine intervention and his mercy, this interview would not be taking place.  Being placed in an atmosphere of betrayal caused me to re-evaluate how I reacted to the “fiery darts” which were launched against my past.  Ignorance can be a painful lesson.  Being reared as an only child, I was not familiar with wounds, betrayal, and jealousy in relationships.  Therefore I had to quickly adjust my thought process to “guard my heart”… for out of it came numerous issues of life.

How important is it to have the support of others during the high seasons but in the low seasons as well?

A strong support system, I believe, is essential to formulate molecules of strength and encouragement and to stimulate positive actions in our lives.  Cheerleaders during the high seasons and caretakers during the low seasons are both essential in diverse seasons in our lives.  It is comfortable to have those around you who celebrate your accomplishments and applaud the achievements which are monumental in your life.  However, it is also very important to surround yourself with those who understand, recognize and embrace you during the times of discouragement, despair and despondency.  I am encouraged when I read the Beatitudes (Matthew 5), as when Jesus was teaching the disciples he addressed the numerous emotions which we all would be faced with and he taught the disciples how to address the diverse areas of life.

Were there ever times when you realized that you had taken a wrong path or made a mistake in your pursuit of purpose? If so, was there something still gained in the process?

Most definitely, the abuse of alcohol dulled my senses and delayed my arrival.  The substances caused my delivery to not be appreciated.  I knew inside the path that I was ordained to take; yet I succumbed to the detour by allowing alcohol to become the prevalent factor in my life.  Once I became aware of the sobering fact that I was a functioning alcoholic, I began to take strides to correct my path and gained the respect I so deserved.  If anything was gained in the process, it was the fact I can now share with others the pitfalls and encourage others to seek help and guidance and realize your arrival may be delayed, however it is not denied.

What has been most rewarding in living life with and for Jesus?

The most rewarding gift for me is to know without a doubt that I am forgiven.  I am forgiven from the bad decisions I made in my past.  I am forgiven for the situations I placed myself in which were non productive in my life.  I am also thankful that the Lord demonstrated through His Word the fact that I must forgive myself.  I forgive myself for not treating my body wisely in my youth and for not “listening” to sound advise and Godly counsel.  So, yes the most rewarding gift for me is the act of forgiveness in every facet of my life.

What would you say to the woman who feels “stuck” or unfulfilled in her life?

I would speak to the vibrancy within her, which the “enemy” has tried to dim with despondency, disillusions and despair.  I would speak to the soul of her very being and say, “Arise, for within you are the jewels which the Lord has placed to shine during the darkest hours.”  I would say come forth, and I would speak to the wealth of power which lies within her heart.  I would say “Breathe”, and speak life to the things which appear to be destroyed,  and I would stand in awe as she sheds the spirit of heaviness and adorns herself in the garment of praise.

What words can you leave with us that will encourage and motivate us to make 2011 a year of new direction and purpose?

I believe in order to be aligned with the direction and purpose God has for our lives, we must be focused and faint not.  Focused;  grasping our divine assignment and pursuing our goals with the pant of passion which escapes the heart of those longing to succeed.  Secondly, to faint not; giving up is not an option. Frustrations may arise, but I can’t stop.  Detours may present themselves, however I cannot cease.  It is imperative to remain diligent in the direction the Lord has placed in your life and  be disciplined to the purpose in your life.   Rev 2:17, states “…To him that overcometh will I give to eat of the hidden manna…”   I desire divine manna from heaven in 2011, and in order to receive this,  we must become overcomers.  I’m ready what about you?

Pastor B J - THANK YOU! As always, you are a blessing.

Sharing The Gift of Inspiration

In June of this summer, I attended a Summer Blessings Extravaganza at the invitation of Phyllis Wallace. I wrote a blog post describing my experience titled, “A Good Day Indeed” . It was one of those fellowships that you walked away feeling refreshed. When I connected with Phyllis by phone before the event, I felt that she was a beautiful person by her spirit. When I arrived at the location, I literally felt that same beautiful presence when I walked through the door. I made my way into the area and found Phyllis Wallace to extend a hug of appreciation for the invitation.

As I looked around at the beautiful home decor and gifts, I was truly convinced that everyone who loves the Lord Jesus should have expressions of that love in their homes to reflect His presence in their lives. Phyllis and I have talked occasionally since that day and I really wanted to allow readers to share in my acquaintance with such a beautiful person. Here is a brief interview with Phyllis Wallace…

Tracy:  Phyllis, I know that you worked in corporate America for many years before becoming a consultant for Blessings Unlimited®. Can you give us a little background of that particular experience.

Phyllis:  I worked as a Human Resources Leader for three different Fortune 500 companies for over 16 years. I partnered with senior leaders to create the Human Resource strategy to drive the delivery of business goals through the most valuable asset of Companies — that is the employees. I worked with wonderful gifted individuals which was a crucial part of equipping me for my career in direct sales with Blessings Unlimited.

How were you led you to Blessings Unlimited?

Phyllis: I had shopped frequently in Christian bookstores for products and cards with scriptures from the Bible to give as gifts. Most of these items were from DaySpring which is the parent company for Blessings. I became a DaySpring customer and one day I was on the website and a banner talked about Blessings Unlimited and the rest is History!

Tell us more about the company – it’s products and opportunities.
Phyllis: Blessings Unlimited was founded by DaySpring®, the world’s leading producer of Christian greeting cards and gifts. For over 35 years, DaySpring has partnered with Christian stores in local communities to offer meaningful products. Blessings Unlimited continues that tradition and extends it to the home. Our products carry messages of hope and encouragement, peace and joy, grace and love. Our opportunity allows for a wonderful blend of business and ministry, flexibility, unlimited career and income potential.

In your opinion, what makes the company so special?

Phyllis:  We give glory to God!

Has this business made a difference in your life and how?

Phyllis: Yes in my life, but more importantly the life that Jesus lives through me. The Virtuous Women team and I have played a role in helping Consultants earn income for items such as vacations, car payments and missions. This is rewarding.

What would you consider to be the most rewarding aspect of being a consultant with Blessings Unlimited?

Phyllis: I am honored to use the gift of giving as I live out the Blessings Unlimited mission “To pursue the heart of God and bring blessings to others.”

Phyllis, thank you so much for sharing your ministry and business with us. We wish you continued blessings in abundance for years to come.
