What is it about relationships? I’m referring to relationships in general which include marriage, family, friends, work, school, church & community.
On any level, there are and will always be issues, challenges, and conflict. Why? Because we are descendants of Adam & Eve and we’ve inherited the debilitating disease of sin.
We are broken. We are bruised. We are flawed. We are human, and just like Adam & Eve, we fail God and each other.
Today isn’t any different than biblical history when great men and women of God fell short of God’s expectations. We still possess the same flesh-infested character traits of jealousy, hatred, pride, greed, lust, strife and so on.
Somewhere in our hearts, speech or actions, the inclination to sin resides. No one is exempt from its clutches.
Scripture reminds us:
For everyone has sinned; we all fall short of God’s glorious standard. Romans 3:23 (NLT)
For I was born a sinner–yes, from the moment my mother conceived me. Psalm 51:5 (NLT)
As the Scriptures say, “No one is righteous–not even one; Romans 3:10 (NLT)
Grasping this has helped me to understand why human relationships are at times, strenuous.
God created man and woman distinctly different. He then designed each with unique personalities, gifts and abilities.
From birth through adulthood, we are shaped by our family beliefs, customs and practices.
Then, our experiences are extended beyond the home and to the influences of the world around us.
Our flesh becomes initiated into the temptation and pleasures of an earth riddled with sin.
We are thrown into a perpetual battle between right & wrong, good & evil for the rest of our lives.
So, let’s see, we are presented with these factors and expected to have relationships without any problems?
This is a struggle for all of us and unfortunately broken relationships come with the territory of broken people living in a fallen world.
However, the good news is that God has presented the world with His Factor – Jesus Christ! He has redeemed us from the fall of Adam & Eve. He has given us his Spirit to battle and conquer the fleshly temptations. Most importantly, He has provided life-changing principles for relationships through the Bible.
Thankfully, God still permits free will allowing us the liberty of choice. The question becomes do we choose Him or another idol? Do we choose flesh or faith? Do we choose right relationships or wrong relationships? God’s desire is for us to choose right relationship with Him and with each other.
Yes, I know… It can be taxing at times with people but as we know, God’s Word doesn’t change. It’s like medicine to the soul. Initially, it may not taste good but if we give it some time and allow it to get in our system, it’s good for us and the proof is in how much better it makes us feel.
So, this is where it begins…a revelation that we are all guilty of sin but God sees us perfect, blameless, holy, cleansed, redeemed, righteous ONLY because of what Jesus has done for us on the Cross. Based upon history and current times, we cannot achieve this on our own. It’s impossible.
For God’s will was for us to be made holy by the sacrifice of the body of Jesus Christ, once for all time. Hebrews 10:10 (NLT)
Our fragile relationships today can be traced back to “In The Beginning…..”
When we REALLY get this, it should produce gratefulness, humility and a different kind of love in our relationship with God and with each other.
Love to all!
